Gum Grafting in Sarasota, FL

Gum Grafting in Sarasota, FLGum recession is an unsightly result of periodontal disease. With gum recession, the gum line may recede low enough to allow the tooth root to become visible. This may also create issues of sensitivity, inflammation, or decay. There is a treatment available for gum recession. Gum grafting can correct gum recession and with it, prevent any bone and gum deterioration that may result from exposed tooth roots.

Three Types of Gum Grafting in Sarasota, FL

1. Connective-Tissue Graft: This type of gum grafting is the most common and is used to treat gum recession around one or more teeth. A flap of skin is cut in the roof of your mouth. The donor tissue is taken from under that flap of skin and the flap is then sewn back down. The donor gum grafting tissue is sewn to the area around the exposed root. The tissue eventually grows together, correcting the gum recession.
2. Free Gingival Graft: This type of gum grafting takes the donor tissue directly from the roof of the mouth, no flap is cut. The donor tissue is sewn to the area exhibiting gum recession. Patients who have thin gums will generally have this gum grafting procedure. It is also possible to obtain donor tissue for gum grafting from a tissue bank.
3. Pedicle Graft: This type of gum grafting pulls donor tissue from the gum tissue around the site of the gum recession. A flap, or pedicle, is cut into the gum tissue and then pulled over the exposed tooth root. It is sewn into place, covering the gum recession. Patients with sufficient gum tissue benefit from this gum grafting procedure.

After a gum grafting procedure, the patient will be placed on a restricted diet of soft foods and given a set of post-operative care instructions. It is crucial that the gum grafting area not be flossed or brushed until it has had time to heal. Dr. Ryan Taylor will recommend an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory after using gum grafting to treat gum recession.
