Periodontics (Gum Disease)

What is Periodontal Disease?
Also known as Gum Disease, Periodontal Disease is the inflammation and infection of the gums and the tissue. The condition begins when bacterial plaque builds up on the tooth. If left untreated, this plaque will harden to form tartar, which is a rough, porous mineral buildup that is yellow or brown in color. As tartar accumulates, it excretes bacteria and toxins that cause gum inflammation. This early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. Symptoms of gingivitis can include red swollen gums, bleeding, and bad breath. If allowed to go untreated, Gingivitis results in Periodontitis or Periodontal Disease. The symptoms worsen to include receding gums, pus, and loosening of the tooth. At this stage, bacteria and infection begins to destroy the gums and the supporting bone structure. Pockets form around the base of the teeth, the gums separate from teeth, and the teeth loosen and may even fall out. And as the condition worsens, the accumulated toxins and bacteria move deeper into the jaw to destroy the bone that holds the tooth in place.

How is Periodontal Disease Treated?
Periodontics is the dental specialty that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gum disease. Gum disease is reversible if it is treated while in the early stages. The dentist will scale the tooth to remove plaque and calculus, and plane the tooth roots to smooth them. The dentist may prescribe antibiotics to clear up any infection or inflammation in the gum tissue. In moderate to severe cases, the dentist will need to surgically trim the gums, remove the hardened plaque build-up, and surgically re-contour the damaged bone.

With recent advances in technology, there are now alternative ways to treat periodontal disease - through the use of Laser Periodontal Therapy and LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure).
