Osseous Surgery
What is Osseous Surgery?
Osseous surgery (bone surgery) is a surgical procedure that is performed on the jawbone bone and overlying tissue. Osseous surgery is used to repair damage caused by periodontitis (gum disease).
Periodontitis causes the progressive loss of the alveolar bone surrounding the teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to the loosening and loss of teeth. The purpose of osseous surgery is to contour the bony structure around the tooth and place the gum line close to the bone line.
Osseous surgery reshapes the bone to get rid of the damaged, uneven areas. This procedure is often used to treat bone loss around multiple teeth.
Preparation
Before the surgery can take place, the patient must undergo periodontal therapy including scaling and root planing. The patient must also maintain a good level of oral hygiene.
The Procedure
First, the periodontist will numb the area using a local anesthetic. Next, the dentist will fold back the gum tissue to gain access to the roots and surrounding bone. Then the periodontist will clean the bacteria from the tooth roots, and trim and reshape the bone around the teeth using a drill and sharp hand instruments. The gums are then placed back and stitched in place.
